Current DataFed data types include: point, image, grid, trajectory, etc. Discussion with Kari lead to the conclusion that we can reduce the internal data types in DataFed to Point and Grid. This consolidation should make the connectivity between the services much simpler - avoiding the many-to-many mapping syndrome.

The Point data type internal format will be a DataSetTable with multiple parameter columns. This will accomodate multi-column point data in all views as well as trajectory data. The Grid data type will be a rectangular grid. Images will also be encoded as grids.

A key question is how to describe the data using the WCS describeCoverage rules. As we understand, WCS 1.1 will allow more flexible output formats, defined by 'Profiles'. The semantics of each data will be encoded in an XML 'Profile' that specifies the details of the offered file. This topic will need considerable attention and work.
