[edit] What has been done?
Jan 2006 NSF Air Quality Observatory Proposal
- Focused on single topic - writing of proposal text
- Approach- Open, Participatory writing of the document
- Shallow structure - links only one layer deep, containing proposal relavent items
- Finite 2-week lifetime for the collaborative writing project - progress and schedule monitors
- Similar wiki was created for the ME449 class
March-Aug, 2006 Chemistry Naming Conventions
- Purpose - Develop a list of standard air chemistry names
- Approach - Open, participatory, collection of ideas and resources
- Maintanence - Initial set-up at CAPITA, site maintanence and development by Christiane Textor, Paris.
- Features - Considerable discussion, collection of ideas and resources
- Finite 5 month lifetime
[edit] DataFed Wiki
- The wiki is the user-maintained workspace of the federated data system DataFed
- Problems we've had with the wiki:
- Create pages, but can't find them
- Hierarchical Structure
- Date and Geo tagging doesn't fit the category tags very well.
[edit] Tagging Conventions
- The wiki is a very writable system, however it can easily become write-only. Pages that aren't tagged are lost
- We read a Jon Udell article this summer that brought up a point called["disciplined tagging"]. This means there is a common vocabulary and way of tagging pages to create structure.
- This disciplined approach has been implemented on each of the content pages where when you add a title in the box the new page you create already has the standard/rigid tags.
- Using the tags to create structure by filtering with the dynamic page list.
<DPL> debug=1 category = WebApps notcategory = Unfinished notcategory = Composite namespace = shownamespace = False mode = unordered order = ascending count=3 ordermethod=title redirects=exclude addfirstcategorydate=False </DPL>

[edit] RSS and Wiki
- Use of RSS both into the wiki and RSS out from the wiki
- Using Del.icio.us to tag links - with unique grouping of tags anyone can tag the links.[Ex. tagging other wikis http://del.icio.us/tag/datafed+otherwiki]
- RSS into the wiki:
<rss>http://del.icio.us/rss/tag/datafed+otherwiki</rss>
creates:
Delicious/tag/datafed otherwiki
- It is also being used to collect DataFed Consoles
- Wiki can RSS out as well from Special:NewestPagesBlog: Newest pages RSS link
- Can Portals RSS?
[edit] Other Wiki Issues
- Inability to know "What's New" as everyone works in parallel - Newest Pages link
- Connecting DataFed to the Wiki
- In the wiki there are pages for some of the datasets. It would be good if these pages were linked to from the Viewer so that there was a place for comments and more information. Also it would be nice if the wiki page was automatically generated at registration.
