2006-11-11: Tagging content: where?
From Datafedwiki
Back to DataFed Development Events
Where to tag: in wiki?, del.icio.us? both? Now days the "big new thing" is tagging, particularly social tagging. Tagging augments databases and also sharpens general searches such as just Google.
Tagging within the DataFed wiki helps organize wiki content provided that one applies disciplined or consistent tagging. However it is restricted to the small community that happen to know and use the wiki. Del.icio.us, being a totally open bookmarking and tagging facility allows anyone on the web to contribute, tag, and comment on bookmarks. This allows for, instance, the creation of "most popular" lists; navigation to "people who tag this... also tag that"
One possibility is to use apply disciplined tagging within the DataFed wiki, but also to post those well-tagged pages as bookmarks on Del.icio.us. This way one uses the benefit of tagging within DataFed wiki and also on a much larger scale in DataFed/Del.icio.us.
