Humans are the information drivers!! They either provide the pullind or pushing forces. Humans are also impediments to info flow: They prevent info to get out; or other's info to get in.

[edit] Diffusion

Budgeting Information - Data system that allows people to access/view data - want the whole system to grow - want bigger (more people knowing about it and taking information out from the system, allow diffusion to get closer to those people that matter (pressure or suction oriented) deliver data,

Web 1.0: Data network grows because (few) providers serve and many users pull information from servers Web 2.0: Many providers serve content; much more users access; providers/users start create content by mashing

- Even in RSS, users have to subscribe.

Stages

[edit] Augmentation

surface area - link from the viewer, link from ESIP, link from DataFed -> more people can see it -> more people can add to it (datasets, comments and other meta data)

Adding data - they can use tools such as overlays and combining multiple datasets Adding bugs & wishes - they can see if their need is known or needs to be addressed Adding discussion - learning through dialog

  • Adding tags and information because it becomes more easily searchable findable.
  • By adding your own profile and participating you add the likelihood to have a match. Once you have found a common interest then you may want to interact through discussion.
    • Discussion on wiki is chopped up because each page has a discussion. on our wiki the discussion is similar so it doesn't need to be split up on different pages.
    • Blogs allow broadcast in open space. Blogs are mashable to myspace/facebook allowing users rss their blog to their profile.
    • Can point to blog, blog entry or specific comment.

Technorati - searches tags from blogs, pictures, videos, etc. the bottom line is that you can use your blog, but technorati uses the tags to create a network effect. Tags not only come from provider, but also come from user

Techmeme shows blogs that are discussing same article.

Peer-to-Peer - grid computing, sharing things (social and shown to be better architecture than centrally located archit.) New phenomena Social Software - TIMEMag You P2P is invented by Napster
