[edit] GEOSS Workshops

Contents

The IEEE, ISPRS, OGC and other participating organization and members of GEO have sponsored a series of workshops entitled “The User and the GEOSS Architecture” beginning in July 2005, each workshop having a region-specific theme, e.g.: Tsunami in Seoul, Korea, Wind Energy in Beijing, China, and Air Quality in Denver, Colorado.

This one day Barcelona Workshop is focused on the Global Earth Observation System of Systems architecture and its initial implementation and operations. The workshop will provide a forum for addressing and discussing the benefits and challenges of advanced global information system implementation with sample applications in Biodiversity in the Mediterranean Region.

  • Morning session: GEOSS System and Interoperability (Al Gasiewski, Siri Jodha Singh Khalsa)
  • Afternoon session: BioDiversity in the Mediterranean (Changyong Cao, Ivan Petiteville)
  • SoS in operation: OGC demonstration (Sahara Dust Forecasting and Impact Assessment on Biota and Humans in the Mediterranean)

[edit] GEOSS Interoperability Demo

[edit] Demo Theme: Sahara Dust Forecasting and Impact Assessment on Biota and Humans in the Mediterranean

The demonstration uses multple regional and global dust models to simulate the dust transport from Sahara to the Mediterranean Basin. The model simulations will be compared to satellite and surface aerosol monitoring data in Spain and elsewhere in the Mediterranean Basin. The dust aerosol forecasts can be used for public warning systems for unhealthy dust levels, estimating airborne pathogen transport, and other dust impacts on the biosphere. The demonstration will use interoperable web sevices to access data from distributed providers using OGC data access standards (WCS, WMS). Service integration will be performed with the DataFed and possibly other workflow engines. The application software will include a web-based data browser, overlay editor, animator, etc.

[edit] Demo Approach

The approach to this demo is to link available, distributed datasets using OGC standards for interoperability. Therefore, the actual work that needs to be accomplished is:

  1. Selection of a suitable scenario- this part has been accomplished by selecting dust and its impacts over the Mediterranean.
  2. Identification of suitable datasets that represent the multiple aspects of the scenario story.
  3. Accessing the selected, distributed datasets through OGC interfaces.
  4. Configure a story that corresponds to the scenario.
  5. Perform the demonstration at the Barcelona GEOSS Architecture Workshop.

[edit] Demo Status

The Barcelona demo is in its early phase of self-configuration. A substantial number of relevant datasets are currently accessible through the OGC standard interface. Other datasets are being turned into web services using standard WCS/WMS interfaces. The most important missing pieces pertain to the biological aspects of the Mediterranean region that may be related to dust.

[edit] Sahara Dust Transport Models

SKIRON/Eta at University of Athens, Atmospheric Modeling and Weather Forecasting Group (UOA/AMWFG) predicts the atmospheric life cycle of the eroded desert dust and was developed as a pluggable component of the NCEP/ETA model.(??)

  • Need content from George Kallos, very briefly describing the dust model. Also need good links to model description.

GOCART Global Aerosol Model operated by NASA Goddard Space Flight Center

  • Need link to GOCART model description
  • Data are accessible from DataFed via NASA Earth Science Gateway (ESG)

[edit] Observational Data on Sahara Dust

  • Surface monitoring data from continuous PM monitors in Spain. Xavier Querol, any other datasets we could show as time series or maps?
  • Satellite data: OMI (TOMS Aerosol Index), MODIS AOT and color image. Available through the DataFed mediator.

[edit] Pathogens Carried by Dust

  • Need content from Lorenzo Bigagli. Are there maps showing Bio(something or another) over the Med.
  • Any additional data on Biodiversity?

[edit] Interoperable Services

  • Will be filled in by R. Husar, C. Perez, and L. Bigagli
