2008-01-30: JMyers: Enabling Science with Cyberinfrastructure
From Datafedwiki
Back to DataFed Development Events
- Social Aspect of Cyberinfrastructure - Dan Atkins
- Need to make technology fit the way people work
- Web 1 - people publish only when done/ Web2.0 text doesn't have to be complete, or all parts in one place
- YouTube Video The Machine is us/ing us
- Amdahl's Law - system is limited by slowest part - Humans are the limiting step in web2.0 system. Parts that can be computerized benefit
- Workspaces have resources/data, tools, discussion
- Different point in talk also mentioned tools for groups (Wiki, doc repository, chat, task list, scenario repository, training material)
- Tagging is annotation to organize content in multiple hierarchies
- YouTube allows storage of content in one place and then to embed the content in another website with commentary.
- Reusable, plugable components are the key to building systems that can survive time and evolve and get richer and richer - just plan for change
- Unique identifying tag allows multiple applications to pull data pertaining to one object.
- Workflow-> Provenance -> RDF - capture the process, capture/publish the workflow
- Let people use the part of the tools that they know
- Wiki is collaborative portal ( create, publish, explore, repeat - publish before done.)
- Good Cyberinfrastructure:
- Evolves as fast as research
- Enabling not stifling
- Research connect practice
- Piecewise approach ?
- Ubiquitous/Persistent
- Empower the individual
- Context
- Social
- Geo
- Causal
