A couple of groups have been using relational database management systems for working with netCDF files. They have built extensions to the databases that allow import of the netCDF data that can then be processed using the standard relational database functionality.
It's an interesting idea but it would be beneficial to document the limitations of this approach.
As far as I can tell, two groups have been working on this and both have been involved in GALEON.
Barrodale has developed an extension to RDBMS (primarily PostgreSQL) An overview is presented in these slides More information is on their website
