Data attribution, acknowledgement, Provenance
From Datafedwiki
Back to DataFed Tasks for Fall 06
Need to bring together the DataFed community to establish the manner in which the attribution, acknowledgement and provenance should be handled in a distributed data processing value-chain. This documentation needs to include input from:
- data providers (how would you like to be acknowledged?)
- data users (what info is needed when you use the data?)
- data mediators and processors (what processing steps are performed in the value-chain?)
The approach to derive the initial information would start with approaching the current participants in DataFed: providers, users and mediators.
Provenance is the origin or source from which something comes. The term is often used in the sense of place and time of manufacture, production or discovery. Comparative techniques, expert opinion, written and verbal records and the results of tests are often used to help establish provenance.
[edit] DataFed Benefits to Providers
- Tools for access, browsing, analysis - directly useful to the providers themselves
- User feedback through bugs and wishes and general discussion on the dataset.
- Application and usage context - DataFed views, stats, references, etc. on the dataset.
