[edit] OMI NO2 on AirNOW

080421 RBH

[edit] Phase I, July 07-April 08

The first phase of the work on OMI NO2 and linking NASA-EPA consisted of exploring the OMI NO2 dataset for suitability in Air Quality Management. The resulting activities included:

  • Establishment of a Giovanni-DataFed network link and federating the OMI dataset in DataFed
  • Development of suitable spatio-temporal interopoalion algorithms for Giovanni-supplied data
  • Exporing the OMI NO2 data for AQ daly, weekly and seasonal pattern analysis,
  • Comparison/verification of OMI NO2 and EPA NOx anthropogenic emission inventories
  • Preliminary estimation of NOx emissions from several fire events - to augment anthropogenic inventories
  • Exploration of OMI NO2 and OMI AerosolIndex to Smoke events - chemical kinetic anaysis

[edit] Phase II, April 08 -

EPA is now ready to link OMI NO2 images to the AirNoW website. Activities in this phase may include:

  • Establishing connection and near real time (NRT) data transfer of OMI data at KNMI.
  • Developing data wrapping and delivery of NRT OMI data as WCS and as images
  • Collaborating with Giovanni team in developing parallel, redundant OMI data delivery; DataFed focus on development and exploration while Giovanny on operational data delivery

Approach and Products:

  • Esip cluster... dataspace... community ... stuff - Stefan, give it a crack?
  • Design and implemetation of an attractive OMI NO2 website for the prepsentaion of OMI data to the public - including data interpration to aid the public
  • Design and implemetation of a a functional OMI NO2 website for the research community; including data processing and exloration tools - complementary to Giovanni - including science interpretation of data

[edit] Phase III, Research on AQ Applications - longer view???

The OMI NO2 is a research product with many unknowns about its applicability. The use of the satellite data for AQ application is further complicated by the need for surface concnetrations estimates. Research on combining and fusing the sexisting surface, satellite and possibly model data is needed.... (this research has an obvious beginning but no clear end)...
