Summary: Study of connectivity within multi/interdisciplinary research centers. Found that it is necessary to have unifying purpose or theme for center. Found that collaboration between scientist with large functional distance between disciplines is unlikely. Particularly because there is some confusion about the disciplines (i.e. Social science and societal benefits.)However, if these confusions can be cleared up, R.C. could change the way science is done (application of science to society), academic redefinition and university reform. Centers should be established, but researchers should be dynamic short periods of high intensity research.

Notes:

  • Paper is network focused, not a value-chain collaboration, but group collaboration
  • Research of Interdisciplinary R.C. and implementation of R.C. have diverged - reality not captured in research
  • Hub - most overall connections to researchers (PIs)
  • Bridge - most interdisciplinary connections (Grad Students)
