[new][edit][reply] Rhusar: Decision Support System

Hi Lawrence and Kathy,

Some time ago you have indicated interest in the details of the of the 'decision support systems' used in air quality management.

Recently I was preparing a presentation for a workshop on User and the GEOSS Architecture in which I included some discussion of the DSS used in two specific AQ applications.

  • Canada Smoke DSS Use Case 1. Canadian Smoke Impact on US Air Quality, June/July 2006 (for Exceptional Event Analysis - AQ Regulations) (PPT, Narrated Flash Screencast, 5 min)

You may find it more convenient to play the narrated screencast presentations. From my prespective, the main rationale for analysing the form/function of these DSS was to help architecting and tuning the information system of systems] that supports these decison making processes. Consider these as crude attempts. A full and accepatable description of an air qulaity DSS is only possible after the proper verification and contribution of the key players within each DSS.

With this in mind, I am passing a cordial request to Neil Frank and Rich Poirot to verify/comment/augment the DSS description for the first Use Case 1. (Canadian Smoke). Similarly, this is a request to Terry Keating verify/comment/augment the DSS for Use Case 2. Hemispheric Transport policy.

Further ideas from others would be most welcome. May a more effective air quality DSS be our reward.

This note is on the open DataFed wiki. If response through the wiki/email is not convenient, I would be more than happy to call you and discuss your comments. Regards,Rhusar13:35, 11 August 2006 (CDT)

[new][edit][reply] EWashburn: Picture from ESIP

Hi Rudy - Steve Young saw a nice slide that you have (maybe he saw it at ESIP) of the page 17 diagram (Figure 1 on page 17 of Strategic Plan for US IEOS) with a box above expanding on decision support. Would you please send me that slide or the presentation with that slide in it? Thank you, EWashburn13:35, 8 January 2007 (CDT)

[new][edit][reply] ...Rhusar: Re:Picture from ESIP

Hi Ed, Good to hear from you. Yes, since last summer I have been thinking about ways of expanding the 'Decision Support' box in the GEOSS architecture diagram for air quality. Both Lawrence Friedl and Kathy Fontaine of NASA have encouraged us to illustrate this particular kind of DSS. In the wiki discussion you will find an elaboration on this expanded DSS picture. In order to provide more specific illustration we have also prepared two use case screencasts (Canada Smoke Exceptional Event,HTAP Model Intercomparison). These should illustrate the broader context in which these DSS operate.
Your question and interest in expanding the DSS picture is vitally important for the design of the supporting information system. Recognizing and agreeing on the DSS structure and function (i.e. DSS architecture) for the different applications is a necessary condition for the engineering design of the DSS itself. Hence, it seems valuable to seek consensus on the air quality DSS architechture(s). At the risk of being a nuisance, I will continue to seek feedback and response from knowledgable individuals WikiSysop 15:10, 10 January 2007 (CST)
