[new][edit][reply] [GSN] Next GWS Telecon -- GPercivall May 9, 2007 9:51 AM

A presentation for discussion in tomorrow's telecon is now posted:

http://portal.opengeospatial.org/files/?artifact_id=21453.

[new][edit][reply] Re: [GSN] Next GWS Telecon -- Rhusar May 9, 2007 12:56 PM

I looked over the PPT for tomorrow's GWS telecon and noticed that for the Barcelona GEOSS workshop there is no demonstration listed.

I will be going to IGARSS07 in Barcelona. If there is a need, we would be interested in organizing an interoperability demo as part of the July 22 workshop. As I gather, the approach would be similar to IGARSS06 in Denver. The particular topic I have in mind is related to Sahara Dust: Interaction with Weather and Climate.

In addition to the "usual suspects" from the interoperability groups (Liping Di, Ben Dominico, Stefano Nativi and others), we could count on the participation of our colleagues in Europe. In particular:

  • University of Athens (George Kallos), which developed a Sahara Dust model, and the Barcelona Supercomputing Center (Carlos Perez), which runs the model.
  • Earth Science Institute (Xavier Querol), which has dust monitoring stations throughout Spain.

This particular demo would also be part of the international treaty development for Hemispheric Transport of Air Pollutants (HTAP) which is endorsed by the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) as well as by the Geneva GEO office.

Please let me know if this would be of interest.

Rudy,

We are in need of an leader for the OGC demo in Barcelona. The approach is similar to IGARSS06 and you would be a good leader.

Your ideas and colleagues are a good starting points that will need to be developed as we move forward.Presumably Sahara Dust can be related to the Workshop theme of "Biodiversity in the Mediterranean".Certainly the geographic connection is good. The connection of weather to biodiversity may be left to the reader as an excercise. Your connections to reserachers in Spain and Greece are a good plus.

So during tomorrow's telecon, lets confirm you as leading the workshop.

[new][edit][reply] GWS telecon -- GPercivall May 11, 2007 8:47 AM

Lorenzo,

Your offer to participate in the IGARSS workshop was announced in the GWS telecon yesterday. Rudy had previously proposed to prepare a Sahara Dust demonstration working with an organization in Barcelona. During the telecon Rudy took the action to get with you to discuss this. Siri Jodha is organizing the workshop which has a theme of Biodiversity in the Mediterranean. Next GSW telecon will be 24 May.

[new][edit][reply] Re: GWS telecon -- SJodha May 11, 2007 11:37 AM

Your offered assistance at the Barcelona workshop is most appreciated. There will be two 30-min talks in the afternoon on Biodiversity and I have penciled in Hannu Saarenmaa as one of the speakers. Stefano is working with Hannu on the biodiversity scenario and I expect this will be featured in both the IP3 presentation I will give in the morning and Hannu's talk in the afternoon. What would be really spectacular would be to couple the atmospheric dust model with biodiversity data (well, perhaps just biological data - the biodiversity word is getting a bit overused). We were thinking correlating algae blooms with dust deposition. Any other impacts of dust on biology you can think of?

[new][edit][reply] Re: GWS telecon -- LBigagli May 11, 2007 12:30 PM

I actually work with Stefano (I meant our group with the "we"), so I suggest we discuss this together when he's back from Manchester tomorrow, so we can maybe get in touch on monday). Concerning the impact of desert dust on biology, another interesting aspect is the dispersion of dust-borne pathogenic species, causing infections in downwind ecosystems. Just an idea :-)

[new][edit][reply] Barcelona Demo - Contact with LBigagli -- Rhusar May 16, 2007 2:26 PM

Hello Lorenzo,

Long time no talk. Hope life is treating you well. I'm delighted to hear that your group would be interested in participating in the Barcelona Demo. As you have seen from the messages, I have "volunteered" to facilitate the Barcelona IGARSS07 GEOSS Demo. Of course, that simply means that we will initiate the demo organization. The actual activity will be highly collaborative.

Based on earlier discussions I had with Carlos Perez and George Kallos at the EGU meeting in Vienna, I proposed the general topic for the scenario to be Dust Transport Over the Mediterranean. I was then reminded that the theme of the Barcelona Workshop is Biodiversity over the Mediterranean. At the OGC telecon, Siri mentioned that we could tie the dust to biological productivity in the Med. Your suggestion of linking dust to the transport of pathogens is terrific. So, we seem to have the main components of an interesting demo. It's up to us to make it also useful for advancing interoperability.

We have begun the "facilitation" by setting up a Wiki page for the Barcelona Demo. It contains some background information and a few links to previous demos in the same series.

Once again, I'm personally delighted to interact with you again and work toward our common goal of advancing interoperability.

[new][edit][reply] Re: Barcelona Demo - Contact with LBigagli -- GKallos May 17, 2007 4:32 AM

Thanks for your e-mail and the promotion of the research in the Mediterranean Region related to dust transport. It seems that this activity organized in Barcelona is quite interesting.

I would like to inform you that we had in the past the EU funded project ADIOS for atmospheric deposition over Mediterranean as well as MERCYMS and MAMCS projects related to mercury budget.

Currently we have the running project INSEA related to ecological productivity in selected locations (Pagasiticos Gulf in Greece, Tagus area in Portugal and another location in SW France). You will find all this info in our web http://forecast.uoa.gr under “active projects” or “finished projects”. I think this Barcelona meeting is quite interesting and a lot of INSEA participants would like to participate if it is not late. A good contact person is Dr George Triantafyllou from HCMR, Greece (gt AT ath.hcmr.gr).

[new][edit][reply] Re: Barcelona Demo - Contact with LBigagli -- LBigagli May 28, 2007 9:55 AM

It seems to me that dust is usually related to marine biomass increases, coral reef problems, etc. Dust-borne pathogenic is also a strict research subject, moreover "addressed by surprisingly few".

Apart from this personal considerations and assuming we'll roll this demo out (which I hope): as you know, we're already involved in another bio-diversity demo in the workshop and we've developed a piece of technology to access the Global Biodiversity Data Information Facility. Maybe some of those data could be useful also for this demo. Stefano is in touch with the GBIF people, so I suggest you write to him about the suitability and accessibility of those data.

Also very glad for this new collaboration of ours.

[new][edit][reply] Barcelona Demo - Contact with GKallos -- Rhusar May 22, 2007 5:13 PM

Dear George I would like to call you soon regarding the Barcelona Demo so that we could establish the manner in which we could collaboratively prepare for that interoperability exercise. The Wiki page for the Barcelona Demo is now populated with some content and you are most welcome to jot down ideas and notes in it. Please do not hesitate to throw out ideas regardless of their direct relevance to the demo. From my perspective, the key is for us to start linking the multiple data systems so that they interoperate. The "good science" will automatically follow.

The next OGC telecon regarding the Barcelona Demo will be on May 29.

[new][edit][reply] Re: Barcelona Demo - Contact with GKallos -- GKallos May 23, 2007 1:06 AM

Thanks for all your effort promoting research in this field and distribute data on an easy way. I will try too. In any case, several data fields related to dust are already available from our operations. We provide them to UNEP and several Oceanographic and Air Pollution related Institutes. Just tell me how you want them to be available for your system.

[new][edit][reply] Barcelona Demo - Contact with GYetman -- Rhusar May 22, 2007 5:34 PM

Hello Greg, As you recall from the OGC telecon, I have "volunteered" to facilitate the Barcelona GEOSS Architecture Demo. I would hope that you would be willing to participate in the demo at any level that suits your interests or schedule. At the minimum, we would like to access several of your gorgeous datasets such as the global and US population, human footprint... some of which are already registered in the federated data system, DataFed. Furthermore, we would greatly appreciate any additional guidance to other datasets ( e.g. FAO) that might be relevant to Biodiversity over the Mediterranean.

[new][edit][reply] Re: Barcelona Demo - Contact with GYetman -- GYetman May 23, 2007 9:02 AM

It would be great to have our datasets used in the demo. Unfortunately, I won't be able to make the Barcelona meeting in person but I'm willing to help out with access to our services, and to work on the demonstration scenario. I'll take a look at the wiki this afternoon and see what I can think of.

[new][edit][reply] Barcelona Demo - Contact with CPerez -- CPerez May 23, 2007 9:53 AM

Tell me, what do you need? Our dust output is kept in a binary format with the native grid of the model which is an Arakawa rotated E-grid. Tell me how to proceed. Please visit our web page to see other possible products for the future datafed: DREAM Dust Model and Air Quality Forecast for Europe

[new][edit][reply] Re: Barcelona Demo - Contact with CPerez -- Rhusar 22:00, 24 May 2007 (CDT)

Carlos, Appreciate the offer. Given the data formats, we can read binary grids. However, we would need help with the projections. For data overlays and numeric comparisons we are using lat-lon projection. Could you help us with a code for reprojecting your grid to fixed lat-lon? Alternatively, you could provide us with another grid which would tell the lat-lon of each of your grid points. Initially, a 2-D grid would suffice for: AOT, surface concentration, deposition and dust load.

[new][edit][reply] Re:[GSN] GEOSS Workshop Demos Telecon - Today - noon EDT -- Rhusar May 24, 2007 10:37 AM

For the Barcelona WCS demo, a wiki site was set up as the workspace for the 'virtual workgroup'. http://datafedwiki.wustl.edu/index.php/2007-07-22:_GEOSS_Arch_BarcelonaDemo

It contains the: - Interoperable (WCS, WMS) Datasets - Satus of the data gathering - Demo-related threaded discussion from e-mails (illustrates the process) - Demo description and links

An updated set of slides from this telecon are now available: http://portal.opengeospatial.org/files/?artifact_id=21699

[new][edit][reply] NASA GIOVANNI participation in Barcelona demo -- GLeptoukh 17:09, 2 July 2007 (CDT)

Rudy, We haven't heard from Kari yet, while we really need to get some better understanding of connecting Giovanni to DataFed for any kind of a demo.We need to identify a dataset in DataFed that is currently not in Giovanni, but has similar spatial and temporal resolution (1 deg, daily or monthly), has a compatible format (preferably HDF), etc. Then it'd be great to demonstrate correlations between this product with other Giovanni data over Mediterranean. The other way around, we want to know how you guys managed to utilize our direct Giovanni WMS - again good for a demo. Also, it'd be good to know how can we serve A-Train curtains to DataFed. Should DataFed just point to an image? Can DataFed handle vertical dimension? -Greg

[new][edit][reply] Barcelona Demo Update -- Rhusar 23:19, 8 July 2007 (CDT)

Dear Barcelona Team, Here is a brief update on the developments regarding the Barcelona Demo. Further details on all of the items are on the Barcelona wiki page. On the July 6 GEOSS Web Services (GWS) telecon, the response to our proposed presentation (slides 12-20) was most favorable. Version 2 of the scenario has matured and is now entitled "Sahara Dust and Ocean Productivity Over the Mediterranean." The job for this week is to illustrate how the GWS - networked data system can help studying the dust-chlorophyll relationship. Looking forward to interacting with you during this remaining two weeks. Regards, Rudy

[new][edit][reply] BCN Demo Screencast done -- Rhusar 12:51, 15 July 2007 (CDT)

Dear Demo Participants

The demo screencast is now recorded and the wiki updated - hope you like it. It is 7 min.

For my part of the presentation I would need another 3 minutes. The rest of the demo show time can be divided among the demo participants present. The content of your statements should include your perspective on data interoperability. I hesitate to add any other "guidance". Those who wish to present (Xavier, Carlos, Greg, Lorenzo...anyone else?), it would be desirable to let us know by return mail. We have not received a specific schedule for the demo time and duration. As I understand, Siri will distribute that to us this week. Also from Siri we would need to get logistics info on how and where to test the demo on Saturday, July 21. I will be on the road for the rest of this week, but monitoring my e-mail. Once again, thank you all and I hope that this is the beginning of long and stable networking relationship. See you in Barcelona.
