OAQPS Data Summit: Assessment and Guidance on Air Quality Data Systems

Contents

[edit] Notes/Snippets

  • Demonstrate usefulness of DataFed to individual providers, users and mediators.
  • Network effect will produce value to the overall community
  • Classes of particpants involve providers, users and mediators
  • Classes of services: data access services, processing services, display control services and connectivity wrapper/adapter services.
  • DataFed architecture utilizes adaptors and wrappers to facilitate networking for DataFed:
    • Wrapping heterogeneous data was initially thought to be useful for networking-computer accessible legacy data systems that could not be changed at their source. The wrapper can be provided by a third party.
    • Adaptor services are connectors between information systems with well-defined and stable input/output
  • Networking Standards:
    • Loosely coupled workflows from reusuable service components can be created by using wrappers and adapters.
    • Wrappers have flexible inputs that are adaptable specificity of a specific data provider and standardized outputs.
    • Adapters have standardized inputs from providers, but flexible outputs to adapt to the needs of specific clients.
  • Relationship to National Air Monitoring Strategy(NAMS)
    • NAMS was designed to produce more reusable datasets for multiple programs/applications in EPA
    • Information System needs to facilitate the access, processing/analysis/integration of broad range of data to multiple applications
  • Relationship to GEOSS and EPA OEI
    • Explain GEOSS: International/Interagency; Multi-Sensory; System of Systems;
    • GEOSS Approach: Build on existing systems; Publish reusable components; Integrate through international standard interfaces
    • GEOSS Architecture: Service Oriented Architecture;
  • GEO ESIP Coordination Links

[edit] Impediments, Barriers to entry, maintainance

  • Networking involves bidirectional flow of information between nodes (data/feedback)
  • Impediments to network connectivity - Technical/Cultural/Administrative:
    • Impediment to exposing data/info (Stove pipe)
    • Impediment to taking data/info (NIH)
  • Barriers to entry
    • ..
