Dear Rudy

We are writing in reference to the third edition of the book Aerosol Measurement: Principles, Techniques and Applications. Thank you for you agreeing to contribute to the new edition. The publisher, Wiley Interscience, contacted us several months ago and expressed an interest in developing a new edition, since the current edition is six years old and needs significant updating. Wiley indicated that the book has sold well, with a paper back version now available as well as a Chinese translation. We have just signed the contract with the publisher to begin working on the new edition.

We would like you to write a chapter on Satellite-Based Aerosol Measurements. You can change the title if you wish. With the requirement from Wiley to prevent the book from getting longer, we would like you to keep the chapter length to 15 pages. The final version will be due March 1, 2009. We have attached a contract for you to fill out, sign, and return to us as soon as possible. We will collect all contracts and forward them to Wiley.

The Aerosol Measurement book has gained wide acceptance as a “must-have” reference book in the aerosol community. We hope that your contribution to the new edition will further its impact on aerosol science and engineering.

Since the second edition chapters were written in 2001, there have been significant changes in aerosol measurement science and technology and it is tempting to include as much new information as possible. However, to limit publication costs, Wiley has required that the new edition be limited to the same overall page count as the current edition. This means that some reorganization and trimming of several chapters will be necessary. For example, the first chapter on ‘historical aspect of aerosol measurements’ will be dropped, since now the compilation of symposia on this topic at the AAAR meetings are available as books. Chapter 29 on fugitive dust will also be dropped. Some instruments from various chapters are no longer commercially available, so the length of their discussion will be reduced. In addition, some chapters from applications section of the book will be considerably shortened or combined with other chapters.

At the same time, we plan to introduce six new chapters that discuss various topics of current interest in aerosol science. The use of computer calculations will be emphasized throughout the book to help the reader. This will not only let the reader perform more sophisticated calculations, but also improve understanding of the functional behavior of the equations provided.

The new edition presents some challenges in providing a top-notch reference in aerosol science with respect to cohesive content, brevity and quality of material presented, and the timely completion of the manuscripts. We understand that you have many demands on your time. However, the current edition should provide an excellent starting point (at least for the authors of chapters in the current edition) to begin revising your chapters and should prove to be less burdensome. We will try to promote communication between authors of chapters that have some topic overlaps. We will also send periodic reminders to promote timely completion of the manuscripts. As you can imagine, this is a large effort with many contributors and your cooperation for timely completion of the manuscripts will be appreciated. We will soon send you and your co-authors a contributor’s contract and additional information on the format of the new edition. The schedule for the preparation of the new edition is as follows:
