Title: Evaluation and Comparison of CO2 Sequestration in Three Different Geologic Media
Climate change is a complex environmental problem caused by excess greenhouse gases, such as CO2, in the atmosphere which arise from anthropogenic sources. One approach being pursued to mitigate climate change is CO2 sequestration in geologic media. CO2 sequestration in a geologic media is an attractive option for several reasons: it doesn’t depend on local climate conditions, it reduces the need to transport CO2 and it is better understood than ocean sequestration. This paper will analyze the geochemistry of sequestration in the three main types of geologic media used for CO2 sequestration: (1) Displacement of methane and sequestration in coal beds; (2) Storage in depleted hydrocarbon reservoirs and (3) Storage in deep saline aquifers, compare the abatement costs in each media and discuss any environmental implications associated with sequestration. Furthermore the paper will draw conclusions about which, if any of the geologic media alternatives seems most feasible with current technology and what impact carbon sequestration from staionary sources would have on overall CO2 emissions.
Need 10 primary sources.
