What is DataFed?
DataFed is a web services-based software that non-intrusively mediates between autonomous, distributed data providers and users. (See EM DataFed FASTNET Article). The main goals of DataFed are:
- Aid air quality management and science by effective use of relevant data
- Facilitate the access and flow of atmospheric data from provider to users
- Support the development of user-driven data processing value chains

DataFed: An Agile, User-Oriented Air Quality Data System
DataFed: Mediated web services for distributed air quality data access and processing.
DataFed: An Architecture for Federating Atmospheric Data for GEOSS
What is the architecture (form and function) of DataFed?
DataFed is designed in accordance with the GEOSS architecture.
- DataFed provides standard interfaces (data wrappers) to heterogeneous distributed data
- Fosters data integration and use with processing services and tools
- Collects metadata and user-feedback on the federated datasets in DataSpaces
DataFed Resources and Tools for the User
The main resource of DataFed is access to over 50 distributed, air-quality relevant datasets. Each dataset can be explored and analyzed by tools for processing and visualization. For the user, the main components are:
- Data Catalog is used to find and access data. (See Catalog Screencast - 1.3 minutes)
- Data Viewer is for loading, overlay, and browsing any of the federated datasets.
- DataFed wiki is an interactive workspace for the DataFed community.
Air Quality Application Examples
Since 2004, the datasets and the tools of the federated data system have been used in several air quality application projects:
- Exceptional Event Analysis
- Combined Aerosol Trajectory Tool
- Fast Aerosol Sensing and Tools for Natural Event Tracking
