Talk:Tag Conventions

- All pages should be in the same namespace instead of having seperate page type namespaces like the data namespace - Except Help pages - this is done
- Page types could have composite and atomic pieces. The atomic pages that then are used to build "main pages" like Collaboration seem to work the best. 16:46, 19 August 2006 (CDT)

- Need tag for pages that have no tags and need to be fixed like the - NoTags Category:NoTags
- Need tag for pages that could be trashed - Trash Category:Trash
- For Dataset pages - additional tags: Provider and Method?
- With a "standard" set of tags we can do the grouping to create navigation - for example - we may have used catt cattwish wish ... and now we will have two tags catt and wish and when we want to see the pages that fall into that group we will just search for category=catt and category=wish. Same for cattapplications, bugs, etc. 21:46, 19 August 2006 (CDT)

- Jon Udell on Del.icio.us as a database the problem is how to share "groups" of tags that are obvious to him, but not necessarily to the user.
- He also mentions you can query by /tag+tag2... but you can't query tag-tag2
- In the wiki dynamic you can say cat = tag cat =tag2 AND you can query cat=tag notcat=tag2 (See above notes - Jon and I were on the same page and this is repeat)
- He also mentions other ways to beefup the query: term negotiation, string, numeric and date comparison (I don't know what this means.) WikiSysop 15:51, 22 August 2006 (CDT)
---
- use wiki URL to query: http://datafedwiki.wustl.edu/index.php?title=Special%3AAllpages&from=C&namespace=0
- another example: http://datafedwiki.wustl.edu/index.php?title=Special:Categories&limit=50&offset=50
- See Temporary Navigation and Temporary Create New Page
- Activities pages all are dated if you go to Category:yymmdd you will see the list
- I had been using Jon's idea of the tag+tag, our dynamic page list will make some of this very automatic
- I need to make a list of page types and their tags - the templates of the create new page do have correct tags
---
- Show related tags (i.e. when viewers click on atomic they should know that composite is the related tags
- Also tag clouds are semi-helpful maybe on the front page have the tag cloud at the bottom... WikiSysop 12:24, 23 August 2006 (CDT)
- Not sure how the date tag will be used b/c you can't search for 0601 and get 060101...
- http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/User:Barrylb/Calendar_extension_and_special_page renders events by adding a special event page
- Wonder if you can retrieve talk pages based on the tags their article page have with the DPL
- Page Status is bothering me - I thought Done/InProgress were the only two, but there is an Unfinished tag for pages that were just left. Those could be tagged "clean-up" ... Need help fleshing this area out a little. Also a tag "new" for things that still need to be started?
- Changed the left side bar - Need to create pages like datasets for the others instead of pointing to the categories pages.
- Add Format/Method/Provider tags to label all of the current datasets.

so what happeinin along the tag-front???
any news on the TOOLs related to dynamiic pages - filtering-formatting based on tags? - how did Kari respond to your requests on gynamic pages? was isupposed to ask him?
i am a bit puzzled about the questions...first we need tools (for better DPLs) and only then we worry about specific tagsRhusar10:28, 24 August 2006 (CDT)
- I have been weeding out bad tags and updating pages so that they are tagged properly - identifying the tags that need to be on each page type and started creating the "create new page" with updated templates that have those specific tags. I added more structure to the left sidebar - after I looked at mediawiki/wikipedia on how they were laying out the sidebar.
- The dynamic page list is good at filtering pages based on tags you can say notcategory=x or category=x. It understands AND and NOT, no or. There are also no wildcards in this filter. Catalog has good examples of it - all of the lists are DPL. The input box extension lets you use a template for each pagetype - see Create New Page, so that from now on they have the correct tags. The only thing is that the user still needs a little bit of a form for these tags that are standard - drop down to pick page type or page structure/status. (The body of this article shows how I sorted the tags out). The way that they are labled with these types of tags now gives you the flexibility to say give me all the wishes or to narrow down to wishes that belong to a certain provider or that are finished or in progress
- You were going to talk to Kari
- - but the main thing is that the DPL have multiple views - record/full page etc.
- - Another thing would be that DPL be able to only search within a category
- What do you think of the left sidebar? WikiSysop 10:28, 24 August 2006 (CDT)
